The elaborate grandeur of an Asian empire will fill the Miller Performing Arts Center stage tonight through Saturday as The Little Theatre of Jefferson City presents "The King and I."

Tickets are $20. Show times are 7:30 p.m., plus a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee.

Before actors were cast or stage designs were drafted, costume mistress Maria Bish had selected shimmery, colorful fabrics and had been looking through rental possibilities, too. To be sure Bish's costumes told the story compatibly with the stage design and decorations, director Cindy Jobe provided a clear vision of what she wanted.

Sometimes that vision had to mirror what audiences would expect based on the Rogers and Hammerstein production. And at other times, Jobe's vision had to compete with what The Little Theatre did decades ago with the same show.

Interestingly, set designer and musical director played the lead roles in the 1988 version.

"It's the same story; we're not telling it differently," Jobe said.
