Lady Comets get past Lady Falcons

WARDSVILLE — It took one big half inning to turn a pitcher’s duel into a high-scoring affair.
Blair Oaks freshman Payton Staggs and Fatima senior Katelyn Huhn were sharp through the first four innings, keeping the game scoreless. Then the Lady Comets erupted for seven runs in the top of the fifth en route to a 7-4 victory Thursday over the Lady Falcons at the Falcon Athletic Complex.
“It appeared to be the defense was the story of the game again,” Blair Oaks coach Sharon Buschjost said, referencing the Lady Falcons’ five errors Thursday after their four errors in a loss Wednesday. “That’s what killed us.”
Fatima’s offense played a big part of that, though. The Lady Comets sent 12 batters to the plate in the decisive fifth. Ten of them reached base — six on hits, two on walks and two on errors. The third out came when Blair Oaks catcher Amy Dorge threw out a runner attempting to steal.
