Your Opinion: Fire department tax issues questionable

Dear Editor:

After reading all the articles in the newspaper regarding the Fire Department tax, I would ask everyone to think for themselves.

Some of the issues are very questionable. Would it lower your insurance? I doubt it; has it ever before? The July 29 newspaper listed salary and the benefits the firemen have. I am sure many in the private sector would be thrilled to have these benefits. It also stated that other cities are going bankrupt because of paying these types of benefits.

If the firemen want to go to a 401k plan that would be great. Why should I have to pay for their retirement? They are not paying for mine. I see this tax proposal as a way to increase their salary and benefits and the real reason for the proposal.

One of the firemen mentioned Richard Groner in the newspaper. It looks as though he does not like Mr. Groner trying to look out for the best interest of the taxpayers.
