WASHINGTON (AP) — Chris Pontius scored four minutes after halftime to lift D.C. United to a 1-0 win over the Columbus Crew and give United its seventh-straight home victory.

Pontius' team-leading 10th goal pushed United (11-7-3) within one win of tying the club record of eight straight home wins, set in 1998.

Andy Gruenebaum made six saves for the Crew (8-8-4), who failed to build on a two-game win streak for the third time this season.

United remains in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, while the Crew failed to make up ground on fifth-place Chicago — and the conference's final playoff spot.

IMPACT 2, UNION 0

MONTREAL (AP) — Andrew Wenger headed in a goal just before halftime and Felipe Martins added another in the 79th minute for Montreal.

The Impact (9-13-3), who are 8-3-2 at home, opened a seven-point lead on eighth-place Philadelphia (7-11-2) in the Eastern conference, although the Union hold five games in hand.

Both clubs played the final 21 minutes with 10 men after Montreal's Nelson Rivas and forward Jack McInerney were shown red cards after a shoving match.

SPORTING KC 1, REVOLUTION 0

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Teal Bunbury scored in the 20th minute and Kansas City clinched the three-match season series against New England with two wins and a tie.

Sporting KC (11-8-4) snapped a three-match winless streak (0-2-1).

New England (6-11-5) had its winless skid extended to five matches (0-4-1), having scored just two goals over the span. The Revolution were shutout in all three matches against Sporting KC this season.

New England has just one win among its last nine matches (1-4-4) and slipped to 5-3-3 at home.

FIRE 2, TORONTO FC 1

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (AP) — Austin Berry and Marco Pappa scored to help Chicago snap a two-game winless streak.

Berry headed Pavel Pardo's free kick over Toronto goalkeeper Milos Kocic from 10 yards out in the 84th minute after Pappa tied the match from close range in the 64th minute, firing a right-footed shot between the post and defender Richard Eckersley.

Pappa's misplay in the 16th minute led to Ryan Johnson's goal for Toronto.

Chicago (10-7-5) is fifth in the Eastern Conference.

Toronto (5-13-4) played the last 11 minutes of regulation plus four minutes of stoppage time a man down after defender Logan Emory was ejected for a pair of yellow cards, both for rough tackles.

RAPIDS 1, REAL SALT LAKE

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) — Joseph Nane scored his first career goal in the 38th minute and Matt Pickens became the franchise's winningest goalkeeper in helping Colorado snap a franchise worst six-game losing streak.

The Rapids (8-14-1) had been outscored 11-4 during the skid, and hadn't collected a point since a 3-0 win over the Portland Timbers on June 30.

Pickens made one save as he posted his sixth shutout of the year and 38th of his career in gaining his 40th win with Colorado. He had been tied at 39 with Marcus Hahnemann.

Rapids midfielder Brian Mullan became the 15th player to appear in 300 MLS games.
