Driver arrested after car chase

Jefferson City police arrested a California, Mo., man after a car chase Friday night.

The chase began at West Main Street and Dix Road shortly after 9 p.m. when an officer tried to approach the man's car to talk to him about his careless driving, but the driver pulled away.

The chase went eastbound on Main Street and then turned northbound on U.S. 54/63 across the Missouri River Bridge. The suspect vehicle exited at the Route W ramp and turned toward the municipal airport.

Police report the driver was taken into custody after the fleeing vehicle attempted to drive through a chain link fence at the airport, but failed.

The driver of the fleeing vehicle was identified as Charlie Walters, 34.

Police are seeking potential charges of felony driving while revoked, driving while intoxicated, felony resisting arrest by fleeing, leaving the scene of an accident, careless and imprudent driving, and property destruction. Police also report he had two outstanding parole violation warrants at the time of his arrest, a Cole County warrant and a Callaway County warrant.

Walters is currently being held in the Cole County Jail.
