Committee debates JC fire pension funds

The Fire Pension Board is requesting a return of more than $370,000 from Jefferson City, alleging city officials had no authority to approve a transaction of funds.

At the Finance Committee meeting Tuesday, City Administrator Nathan Nickolaus presented committee members with seven proposed supplemental appropriations, including the return of $370,523.53 to the Fire Pension Fund.

Firefighters switched to Local Government Employees Retirement System, or LAGERS last year from the Fire Pension Fund, although the fund remains responsible for firefighters who had already retired or who opted out of LAGERS. Nickolaus said the board believes the transfer of funds was inappropriate ....

Either the funds are there or not. Either the funds were moved legally and in accordance with established procedures and oversight or not. If not done properly then whomever authorized the transfer of funds needs to be held accountable and sent to the Employment Security office.
