LOS ANGELES (AP) - Chris Capuano struck out nine while combining with two relievers on a four-hitter, James Loney drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single and the Los Angeles Dodgers completed a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals with a 2-0 victory Sunday.
Capuano (3-0) allowed three hits and two walks in 6 2-3 innings, sending the Nationals to their fourth straight loss after they entered the series with an NL-best 14-5 record.
Kenley Jansen followed Josh Lindblom out of the bullpen and pitched a hitless ninth for his second save after starting out with six straight balls and getting a visit from pitching coach Rick Honeycutt. Jansen then struck out his next two batters and fanned Jesus Flores with runners at first and second to end it.
Gio Gonzalez (2-1) allowed two runs, three hits and five walks through six innings. He was 6-0 in his previous eight starts since Sept. 12.
CUBS 5, PHILLIES 1
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Matt Garza pitched one-hit ball for seven shutout innings and struck out 10 as Chicago beat Philadelphia.
Garza (2-1) gave up a pop-fly single to Jimmy Rollins leading off the first and nothing more. The right-hander retired 20 of the next 21 batters, with Juan Pierre's seventh-inning walk accounting for the only other baserunner.
Joe Mather homered and Bryan LaHair doubled twice for the Cubs.
Kyle Kendrick (0-2), making his second start in place of injured Cliff Lee, allowed two earned runs and five hits in six innings. He matched his career high with seven strikeouts.
The Phillies have scored two runs or less in 12 of 22 games this season.
BREWERS 3, CARDINALS 2
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Zack Greinke worked six strong innings and Jonathan Lucroy's two-run double capped a three-run sixth as Milwaukee beat St. Louis to avoid a three-game sweep.
Greinke (3-1) allowed a run and seven hits to help stop the Brewers' six-game road losing streak. He's 2-1 with a 2.11 ERA in four career games in St. Louis.
Jaime Garcia (2-1) fell to 17-10 at home with a 2.38 ERA.
John Axford escaped an eventful ninth for his fifth save in five chances and 48th in a row, breaking a tie with Brad Lidge for the fourth-longest string in major league history.
The Cardinals were 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position and stranded 13.
BRAVES 4, PIRATES 3
ATLANTA (AP) - Tim Hudson labored through five tough innings to win in his return from back surgery and Atlanta held on in the ninth to beat Pittsburgh.
Hudson (1-0) pitched in the majors for the first time since his operation last November to repair a herniated disc. The right-hander threw 96 pitches while giving up two runs on six hits and two walks. He allowed at least one baserunner in every inning.
The Pirates stranded 10 runners, including eight against Hudson. Craig Kimbrel gave up one run in the ninth before earning his eighth save.
Martin Prado hit his second homer for the Braves. Michael Bourn had three hits and a walk.
Kevin Correia (1-1) gave up two earned runs on four hits and five walks in 4 1-3 innings. He walked three in the fifth, including a bases-loaded pass to Dan Uggla that snapped a 2-all tie.
DIAMONDBACKS 8, MARLINS 4
MIAMI (AP) - Wade Miley held Miami hitless until the sixth inning and Jason Kubel drove in three runs for Arizona.
Miley (3-0) gave up one hit and an unearned run in 6 1-3 innings to lower his ERA to 1.29. He also singled and scored the game's first run.
The retractable roof over the Marlins' new ballpark averted a rainout, because showers fell all day. But inside, boos rained down from the crowd of 34,918 during Arizona's five-run sixth.
The Marlins trailed 8-0 before they managed their first hit in the sixth, a leadoff double by John Buck. Miami has lost seven of eight.
Miami ace Josh Johnson (0-3) had another poor outing. He struck out eight but allowed 10 hits and five runs in 5 1-3 innings, and opponents are batting .350 against the 2010 NL ERA leader.
Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run homer, his first this season, in the Miami ninth.
METS 6, ROCKIES 5, 11 INNINGS
DENVER (AP) - Ike Davis singled in the go-ahead run in the 11th inning and New York overcame two tying homers allowed by its bullpen to beat Colorado.
Johan Santana, looking for his first win since September 2010, left with a 4-0 lead after six innings but left-hander Tim Byrdak gave up pinch-hitter Todd Helton's grand slam in the eighth. Kirk Nieuwenhuis put the Mets ahead again with an RBI double in the 10th before Frank Francisco (1-1) served up Carlos Gonzalez's solo homer in the bottom half.
David Wright started the 11th with a single off Matt Belisle (1-2) and went to third on Lucas Duda's single. One out later, Davis singled to finally rescue the Mets.
Ramon Ramirez got three outs for his first save of the season. Wright had a two-run double and Josh Thole homered for New York.
GIANTS 4, PADRES 1
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Pablo Sandoval homered to back Madison Bumgarner's fourth straight victory, and San Francisco denied San Diego its first series win of the season.
Joaquin Arias added a two-run triple in the sixth inning to turn a one-run lead into 4-1.
Bumgarner (4-1) struck out a season-best six in 7 2-3 innings for his team-leading fourth victory. The 22-year-old left-hander has held opponents to two or fewer runs in his last nine starts at AT&T Park.
Santiago Casilla finished for his fourth save.
Clayton Richard (1-3) dropped his third straight start. He gave up four runs in seven innings. The Padres have lost six series and split a four-gamer with the Phillies this season.
REDS 6, ASTROS 5
CINCINNATI (AP) - Jay Bruce's fourth home run in four games, a tiebreaking shot in the eighth inning, lifted Cincinnati to a comeback win over Houston.
Bruce hit the first pitch from reliever Fernando Rodriguez (0-3) into the right-field seats for his seventh homer of the season. Bruce has hit home runs in a career-high four consecutive games, one short of tying Cincinnati's club record.
Joey Votto also homered for the Reds, his second of the year. Logan Ondrusek (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth and Sean Marshall earned his fifth save in six tries.
Jed Lowrie hit a two-run shot for the Astros and Matt Downs also went deep.
