Town hall draws Jefferson City crowd

Roughly 40 people turned out Thursday for the second of three city town hall meetings, with most of the discussion centered on the conference center and the old Missouri State Penitentiary.

The town hall, held at Thomas Jefferson Middle School on Thursday, is part of a series of meetings meant to discuss four main projects within the city: the conference center, the multipurpose building, MSP and downtown parking. But, in both the small group sessions and the open comment period, the conference center and MSP development dominated the conversation.

Based on the meeting held Tuesday, I bet over half of the attendees were Chamber members. They will be saying that the people all voted for these projects.

I went. I listened. I spoke. I noted several things and they were: 1) whenever anything was said against the projects, the council people and chamber people were visibly displeased. 2) group questions were worded to solicit support of the projects as presented, not to show support or disapproval for the entire idea. 3) the meeting was attended by mostly older folks. 3) city leaders need to go to the young people (not just the young professional group) by being leaders and going to ballparks, setting up tables at large stores to entice more input from a larger variety (unless they fear the results). 4) Think outside the box -- the convention center and multi-purpose building need not be built downtown -- look along 179, Militia Drive -- this town is small and it takes little time to get anywhere. 5) the city leaders are set for spending about $3.5 million on the MSP -- a property the city does not own. I remember when the mayor said he was goping to run the city like a business -- what business spends that kind of money on another business' property?????

sorry I missed the meeting last night. Took the kids out on the katy trail. the one thing this town has going for it that very few others have is the historic prison. I am a little confused over ownership. so the state retains ownership and draws income from the sale of tours? is the city collecting a tax on the sale of tours?

The city is conducting the tours. I am not sure of what arrangement they have with the state.

There is another meeting next Tues -- you still have a chance.

I thought the Chamber of Commerce was conducting the tours?

The CVB runs the tours. I am not sure that the Chamber is capable of conducting anything.
