Your Opinion: Fair tax would mean tax hike

I read with interest Beverly Martin's letter about the Fair Tax bill (HR25).

I urge seniors to take a careful look at this bill because every indication is that it will result in a substantial tax increase for seniors. Under present law, much of what is received as Social Security is not taxable income. For retirees receiving public pensions, this year 80 percent is not taxable under Missouri law.

Under the Fair Tax proposal, the senior will be paying the tax on any portion of this income from Social Security and public pensions that they actually spend. For many seniors, that is most of the income.

This is the reason several groups representing seniors are opposed to the so-called Fair Tax, taking the position that an increase of taxes on seniors is not fair.
