Your Opinion: Bus route mistake

Dear Editor:

A couple of weeks ago, a young mom and her child waited at the bus stop sign on Schott Road. This bus stop had been on Schott Road a year and a half or better, yet, most of the day you had to make a special call to the office of Richard Turner, bus director, and have the bus go to Schott Road.

This bus stop on Schott Road took three people to work, one young lady to her GED class and one handicapped lady to her apartments. The stop was also utilized as an only means of transportation to the local Walmart for food. Walmart is about a half mile further out on U.S. 50, yet it is annexed in to Jefferson City.

On the last route of this day the bus driver drove past Schott Road, where a mother and child in stroller were waiting at the bus stop. Neighbors could see the bus driver stay on U.S.50 instead of going on Schott Road. The bus company had begun making Schott Road a regular stop, weather permitting.

When the mother and child were told that the bus just wound by U.S. 50 headed to Walmart, the mother and child walked back home. A neighbor called the bus terminal and told them the driver did not do his proper round the bus terminal made the driver turn around and go to Schott Road.

Apparently when the mother and child could not get back to the bus stop when the driver returned, this created havoc for Schott Road.

The next day the bus stop sign on Schott Road was taken down. When concerned citizens from Schott Road called the bus terminal, City Hall, the mayor and governor's office, the citizens were told that Schott Road is not annexed in Jefferson City and should have never been a bus stop.

So after a year and half of service a mistake by the City of Jefferson leaves citizens without any notice that transportation will no longer be provided.

One bus driver was quoted as saying, "It costs $5 in gas for one of these buses to go up the hill and Schott Road."

Either way there was a mistake made by Richard Turner or someone in City Hall. It was made a year and half ago.

Don't call and complain, when a bus driver cuts corners on his final route of the day, because the city will always win.
