JCFD sales tax bill dies

A proposal from the Fire Department to put a potential switch from a property tax to a sales tax on the August ballot died Monday.

At the City Council meeting, members let the proposed bill die on the informal calendar at the department's request.

Assistant Fire Chief Lonnie Brandt said the department has heard concerns that the council is hesitant to put the sales tax forward unless there is firm support from city residents.

"It is our belief that the citizens strongly support the proposal that the city eliminate the dedicated property tax and in its place, institute a sales tax," Brandt said in a presentation to the council. "We, therefore, ask that you not vote on the fire department improvement plan until we have the opportunity to demonstrate the citizen's support for public safety and this proposal."
