DETROIT (AP) - Ben Zobrist hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the ninth inning, and the Tampa Bay Rays scored four runs in the ninth inning to beat Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers 4-2 on Wednesday.
The Tigers (4-1) lost for the first time this season.
Verlander (0-1) took a one-hitter into the ninth and hadn't allowed a run all season, but he gave up one on a wild pitch. Evan Longoria then tied the game at 2 with a single to left on Verlander's 104th and final pitch.
Daniel Schlereth came on and allowed a walk to load the bases, and Zobrist singled up the middle off Jose Valverde.
James Shields (1-0) allowed six hits and two runs in eight innings. Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his third save.
MARINERS 4, RANGERS 3
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - John Jaso had an RBI single with two outs in the ninth to cap a three-run rally off new Texas closer Joe Nathan.
Jaso, the No. 9 hitter playing his first game this season, had a leadoff triple in the eighth and then scored Seattle's first run on a single by Dustin Ackley.
Justin Smoak led off the ninth with a single against Nathan (0-2) before Kyle Seager's double. Jesus Montero then had a sacrifice fly and Michael Saunders an RBI double before Jaso's liner up the middle.
Rookie left-hander Lucas Luetge (1-0) had two strikeouts in 1 1-3 innings for his first major league victory. Brandon League worked the ninth for third save in three chances.
Before the Rangers bullpen faltered, Ian Kinsler and Elvis Andrus hit back-to-back homers and Colby Lewis worked 6 2-3 scoreless innings.
ATHLETICS 5, ROYALS 4, 12 INNINGS
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Jonathan Broxton hit Jonny Gomes with the first pitch he threw with the bases loaded in the 12th inning, forcing Jemile Weeks home for the winning run.
Moments earlier, Broxton (0-1) plunked new A's cleanup hitter Yoenis Cespedes on the first pitch to load the bases and the closer received a mound visit from pitching coach Dave Eiland.
It marked the third time the A's won on a game-ending hit by pitch in Oakland history and first since Olmedo Saenz on July 20, 2002, against Texas.
Coco Crisp's RBI groundout earlier in the 12th tied it at 4 after Billy Butler doubled home the go-ahead run in top half of the inning against Andrew Carignan (1-1).
TWINS 6, ANGELS 5
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jamey Carroll had his first two hits with Minnesota, including the go-ahead single in the seventh, and Josh Willingham hit a two-run homer.
Chris Parmelee hit a tying two-run triple in the seventh before Carroll drove him in with a single off LaTroy Hawkins. Matt Capps pitched the ninth for his first save.
Peter Bourjos hit a three-run, inside-the-park homer and Albert Pujols went 1 for 4 with an RBI for the Angels, who led 5-3 going into the bottom of the seventh against a Twins team that had managed just six runs in their first four games.
The Angels had the tying run on second with one out in the ninth, but Capps got Vernon Wells to ground out to shortstop and Alberto Callaspo to pop out to end the game.
YANKEES 6, ORIOLES 4, 10 INNINGS
BALTIMORE (AP) - Nick Swisher hit a two-run homer in the 10th, and the New York Yankees beat Baltimore for their second straight extra-inning win and a three-game sweep of the Orioles.
Curtis Granderson homered and drove in three runs for the Yankees, who won consecutive extra-inning road games for the first time since July 16-17, 2001, at Philadelphia, according to STATS LLC.
After getting swept at Tampa Bay and starting 0-3 for the first time since 1998, the Yankees are back to .500 heading into their home opener against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday.
With two outs in the 10th, Mark Teixeira hit an opposite-field pop off Kevin Gregg (0-1) that landed just inside the left-field line and between third baseman Mark Reynolds and left fielder Nolan Reimold.
Swisher then worked the count full before hitting a no-doubt drive into the center-field bleachers.
BLUE JAYS 3, RED SOX 1
TORONTO (AP) - Ricky Romero outdueled Jon Lester, Yunel Escobar drove in two runs and Boston fell to 1-5.
Other than a third inning in which the teams combined for five hits and three runs, both left-handers were perfect until Lester (0-1) issued a two-out walk to Rajai Davis in the eighth, snapping a streak of 15 consecutive outs. Davis promptly stole second, beating the tag on a failed Red Sox pickoff play, then scored on Escobar's single to center.
Romero (1-0) saw his streak of 17 straight outs end when Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia drew back-to-back walks to begin the ninth. He left to a standing ovation after Adrian Gonzalez flied out to center, with both runners advancing on the play.
Sergio Santos came on to strike out Kevin Youkilis, then ended it by getting David Ortiz to ground out. The save was the first of the season for Santos, who had blown his first two chances.
WHITE SOX 10, INDIANS 6
CLEVELAND (AP) - A.J. Pierzynski hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs.
Chicago scored four runs in the first off Justin Masterson (0-1), but Cleveland closed to 5-4 in the fifth against John Danks (1-1) on Travis Hafner's two-run double.
Then in sixth, Alejandro De Aza hit a two-run homer off Dan Wheeler and Pierzynski homered against Rafael Perez for a 10-4 lead.
Following a 3-2 opening trip, the White Sox headed to Chicago for their home opener against Detroit on Friday. Travis Hafner had a long solo homer and three RBIs and Shelley Duncan hit a two-run homer for Cleveland, which went 1-4 on its opening homestand. The Indians were 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position, dropping to 5 for 32 (.156) this season.
Danks gave up four runs, seven hits and five walks in 5 2-3 innings. Masterson allowed five runs - three earned - and eight hits in five innings.
