CINCINNATI (AP) - Carlos Beltran and David Freese homered again on Tuesday night, and Kyle Lohse provided another stingy performance, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
The defending World Series champions are 5-1 for the first time since 2008.
Beltran, counted on to help make up for the loss of Albert Pujols, hit his third homer off Mike Leake (0-1). Freese, the World Series MVP, added a two-run shot off Leake - also his third.
St. Louis came into the game leading the majors with nine homers. It has five in its first two games at Great American Ball Park.
Lohse (2-0) has made impressive starts in Florida's summery warmth and Cincinnati's April chill. He took a no-hitter into the eighth inning of a 4-1 win in Miami last Wednesday, allowing only one run and two hits.
With temperatures in the 40s on Tuesday night, he was sharp again, allowing Joey Votto's sacrifice fly and four hits in six innings. Jason Motte retired the side in order in the ninth for his second save in two chances.
The Cardinals rotation has been sensational so far, going 5-1 with a 1.86 ERA.
DIAMONDBACKS 4, PADRES 2, 11 INNINGS
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Chris Young hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning and Arizona remained undefeated.
After Micah Owings (0-1) hit leadoff batter Gerardo Parra, Young sent the next pitch into the lower deck of the left-field stands for his second homer.
Craig Breslow (1-0) pitched a perfect 10th inning to earn the victory against his former team, lifting Arizona its first 4-0 start. The Diamondbacks are the only unbeaten team in the National League.
Yonder Alonso hit a leadoff single in the 11th for San Diego, but J.J. Putz retired the next three batters for his third save in three chances.
BRAVES 6, ASTROS 4
HOUSTON (AP) - Chipper Jones came off the disabled list and began his final season in the majors with a single and a two-run homer to help Atlanta top Houston for its first win.
The nearly 40-year-old Jones singled in his first at-bat and hit a left-handed homer - the 455th of his career - in the third inning to put the Braves up 3-1.
Rookie Tyler Pastornicky added a solo shot for the Braves.
Atlanta starter Tommy Hanson (1-1) yielded six hits and two runs with eight strikeouts in five innings for the win. Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.
Kyle Weiland (0-1) allowed eight hits and four runs in five innings.
DODGERS 2, PIRATES 1
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Andre Ethier hit a tiebreaking homer with two outs in the eighth inning, sending Los Angeles to a victory over Pittsburgh in their home opener.
Exactly 50 years after Dodger Stadium opened, Ethier hit a solo shot on his 30th birthday, a drive into the right-field stands off Jason Grilli (0-1). Kenley Jansen (1-0) pitched the eighth and Javy Guerra the ninth for his third save, sending the Dodgers to a 4-1 start.
Pittsburgh opened a nine-game trip with just five hits against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers' bullpen, and Andrew McCutchen grounded into a game-ending double play.
The Dodgers' Matt Kemp drove in a run in a club record-tying ninth straight game.
NATIONALS 6, METS 2
NEW YORK (AP) - Ross Detwiler pitched five scoreless innings and Washington handed New York its first loss on the same night they learned David Wright has a broken a finger.
Detwiler (1-0) allowed two hits, struck out six and walked one, denying the Mets what would have been their first 5-0 start since 1985.
Ian Desmond homered off Dillon Gee (0-1) leading off the game, and Jayson Werth had four of the Nationals' 13 hits and drove in a run.
New York said during the game that Wright's right pinky was broken a night earlier when he dived back to a base. He will not need surgery and can return when he is pain-free.
BREWERS 7, CUBS 4
CHICAGO (AP) - Alex Gonzalez hit a three-run homer in Milwaukee's five-run first inning, sending the Brewers to a victory over rival Chicago.
The Brewers had no problem adjusting to the weather on the chilly 40-degree evening. They sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning against Paul Maholm (0-1).
Chris Narveson (1-0) pitched five innings to improve to 7-1 with a 3.52 ERA in 14 career games against Chicago. The left-hander allowed three runs, two earned, and six hits.
Francisco Rodriguez got two outs in the ninth for first save of the season.
Maholm's outing ended after four innings. He allowed six runs and six hits.
