That is why the jokester volunteers.

In April 2009, he began volunteering at Jefferson City Animal Shelter, for two reasons, he said.

“Number one: I love animals,” he said, eyes sparkling. “Number two, I needed something to do.”

So he spends time when he can, usually every other week, in a room, just him, his wheelchair and the kittens.

“I just love them,” he said, adding that he has never had a pet kitten.
