EPA, La. officials clash over Nucor permits

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Environmental Protection is questioning while the state of Louisiana issued separate permits for steelmaker Nucor Corp.'s two operations when only one was needed.

The EPA also says in a March 23 order that the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality hasn't provided enough information in the permit record for the government to determine if the permits comply with the Clean Air Act.

Nucor has Louisiana permits for a pig iron plant and a direct reduced iron facility.

The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/Ia9lwY) that state officials say the issue has been explained to EPA previously. They say each facility is separate and don't depend on each other to operate.

The Nucor site is located south of the Sunshine Bridge along the Mississippi River in St. James Parish.
