ST. LOUIS (AP) - Air quality tests in downtown St. Louis have come back clean after a massive release of steam raised concerns about airborne asbestos.
A steam pipe below a street near the America's Center convention center broke around 6:45 a.m. Thursday, sending a plume of steam over downtown. Swab samples at the site found small amounts of ground level asbestos.
But the St. Louis Health Department says air quality tests have shown no asbestos in the air. Further testing is planned, but officials believe the health risk for downtown residents and workers is minimal.
