Winners named in Lincoln science, engineering fair

The 30th annual Lincoln University Regional Science and Engineering Fair was held March 23 along with the 26th annual Missouri Academy of Sciences Central District Paper Competitions.

Fifteen area schools participated with students divided into two age groups, sixth- through eighth-graders and ninth- through 12th-graders.

Each group was subdivided by subject matter, including behavioral sciences, plant sciences, chemistry and biochemistry, Earth space science, physics, mathematics and computers, health sciences, microbiology, engineering, animal sciences and environmental sciences.

Because of its affiliation with the International Science and Engineering Fair, two students were selected to compete against 1,500 national and international entries in May in Pittsburgh, Penn.

The two international finalists are: Mingu Kim, a sophomore at Hickman High School, Columbia, whose project was titled "A Convergence Criterion for a Variant of Newton's Method, Chaotic Basin Boundaries and Computer Graphics," and Victoria Robinson, a junior at Camdenton High School, whose project was titled "Investigating the Use of Holistic Computer Games and Hemispheric Dominance in Music Education: A Novel Approach to Pitch Instruction."

Similarly the top students from the paper competition will represent Lincoln's Central Missouri District at the statewide event hosted by the Missouri Academy of Sciences in April at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
