City notifies voters of ward change at last minute

Some 4th Ward voters may be unaware that they are now in the 5th Ward, according to city officials.

Michelle Gleba, communications manager with the city, said Monday that many voters of the 1st precinct in the 4th Ward were not notified that new ward boundaries, approved in February, have put them in the 5th Ward for today's municipal elections. The polling place, Trinity Lutheran Church, has not changed.

Gleba said the city became aware of the issue Monday after a candidate for the 5th Ward council seat notified the city clerk that some voters did not know they were now in the 5th Ward. She said the county clerk's office did not send out notifications to all affected voters and the city would distribute flyers Monday to notify the residents.

County Clerk Marvin Register said notifications were not sent because of a future change in the polling location. Trinity Lutheran Church will no longer be a polling place after today's election, he said, and notifications to that effect would be sent out after the election.
