4 counties get food, shelter grants

Four Mid-Missouri counties have received federal funds for Phase 29 under the Emergency Food and Shelter National board program.

Ann Bax, president of the United Way of Central Missouri, announced the counties and the amounts received as: Callaway County, $3,982; Cole, $9,125; Moniteau, $1,874; and Osage, $2,849.

A board made of representatives from the United Way of Central Missouri, local governmental bodies, non-profit social service agencies and religious organizations will determine how the funds will be distributed.

Under terms of the FEMA grants, local organizations that are eligible to receive the grant must be private, voluntary, non-profits or units of government, have an accounting system, practice non-discrimination, have demonstrated the ability to deliver emergency food or shelter program and have a voluntary board if they are a private voluntary organization. Any qualifying agencies are encouraged to apply, Bax said.

To apply, United Way must be contacted at (573) 636-4100 for an application. The deadline for applications is noon Oct. 14.
