Thursday's NHL Preseason Capsules

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jordan Staal scored twice in the third period to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins past the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 in exhibition play on Thursday night.

Matt Cooke and Tyler Kennedy also scored for the Penguins, who got all their goals in the third period after falling behind 1-0.

Staal started the run by putting in a rebound. Cooke, one of the game's most notorious hitters, showed soft hands with a deflection of a backhand from Craig Adams to give the Penguins (2-0) the lead.

Michael Frolik scored in the second period for the Blackhawks (0-2).

Chicago starting goaltender Alexander Salak stopped all eight shots he faced before giving way to veteran Ray Emery, who allowed four goals on 19 shots.

Wild 1, Blues 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Warren Peters scored the only goal and Nicklas Backstrom and Matt Hackett combined for the shutout to lead Minnesota.

Peters scored at the 16:33 mark of the second period, beating Jaroslav Halak with a backhand shot from a tough angle on a break-in along the right side of the ice.

Backstrom started the game and stopped 18 shots through two periods before being replaced by Matt Hackett, who stopped 14 shots for the Wild (2-0).

Halak made his first start of this preseason and stopped 16 shots, but the Blues (2-1) outshot Minnesota 32-17 for the game and 14-1 in the third period.

Red Wings 4, Flyers 3, SO

LONDON, Ontario (AP) - Defenseman Ian White scored in the eighth round of the shootout to lift Detroit past Philadelphia.

Darren Helm, Valtteri Filppula and White scored in regulation for the Red Wings.

Philadelphia's Wayne Simmonds scored with less than a minute left in the third period to tie the score at 3. James van Riemsdyk and Matt Carle the Flyers' other goals.

Simmonds also had Philadelphia's only score in the shootout.

It was Philadelphia's third game in three nights after splitting a home-and-home with Toronto. The Flyers will make it four in a row Friday night when they play the Red Wings in Detroit.

Stars 5, Avalanche 2

DALLAS (AP) - Rookie Colton Sceviour had two goals, rookie Jordie Benn scored the tiebreaker in the first minute of the third period, and Dallas beat Colorado.

Benn, older brother of Stars forward Jamie Benn, beat goaltender Trevor Cann from the slot 22 seconds into the third period to snap a 2-all tie.

Loui Eriksson and Steve Ott added third-period goals for the Stars (2-0) in their preseason home opener and coach Glen Gulutzan's home debut.

Gulutzan was promoted from the Stars' top minor league affiliate to replace Marc Crawford, who was fired at the end of last season.

Rookies Tyson Barrie and Brad Malone scored for Colorado (0-1) in its preseason opener.

Canucks 2, Oilers 1

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Owen Nolan scored a power-play goal and Mike Duco had a short-handed score to lead Vancouver.

Jordan Eberle scored for Edmonton, which dropped to 1-2-0 despite sending out a largely veteran squad against a Canucks team made up mostly of minor-league players.

Vancouver improved to 2-1-0.

The game got off to a rough start with a couple of fights in the first 3 minutes as Edmonton's Theo Peckham squared off with Aaron Volpatti and the Canucks' Todd Fedoruk took on Darcy Hordichuk.

The Oilers had a chance to tie it on a power play late in the third period, but Ryan Smyth was unable to bat a hard pass into a wide-open net.
