Mo. lawmakers pass aid for science-based companies

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri lawmakers have sent Gov. Jay Nixon a bill creating a new incentive fund for science and technology-based companies. But a broader bill overhauling Missouri's tax credits and business incentives remains in limbo.

The House and Senate each quit Friday without agreeing on the details of a bill that had been touted as the marquee issue of a special session that began Sept. 6. There seems to be little chance of resolving the stalemate, but the two chambers did agree to keep the special session going in case a compromise can be reached later.

Although it passed, the bill authorizing incentives for science-based companies may never take effect. That's because it contains wording making it contingent upon the enactment of the broader bill revamping the state's business incentives.
