Education board considers "open enrollment' for public schools

State Board of Education President Peter Herschend hopes the state will have an "open enrollment" policy in place within a year.

Under current Missouri law, students who live in one public school district but want to attend classes in a different district must be accepted by the second district, and pay the out-of-district tuition rate the second district's school board previously set.

Open enrollment would allow that student to go to a different district because they think it's better than their home district, under conditions that would be set by the state Board of Education or by state law.
