Education board considers ‘open enrollment’ for public schools
Tuesday, September 20, 2011
State Board of Education President Peter Herschend hopes the state will have an “open enrollment” policy in place within a year.
Under current Missouri law, students who live in one public school district but want to attend classes in a different district must be accepted by the second district, and pay the out-of-district tuition rate the second district’s school board previously set.
Open enrollment would allow that student to go to a different district because they think it’s better than their home district, under conditions that would be set by the state Board of Education or by state law.
