Joplin getting new grant to finish tornado cleanup

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) - The city of Joplin is getting up to $4 million from the federal government to complete the demolition and removal of debris from the May 22 tornado.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon announced the fresh funding Monday night to the Joplin City Council. He says the Community Development Block Grant is being administered through the state Department of Economic Development.

The EF-5 tornado that killed 162 people also damaged or destroyed about 8,000 homes, businesses and other buildings in Joplin.

Nixon says the structural cleanup is 96 percent done, but there are still about 200 buildings to be demolished and roughly 1,300 residential foundations and slabs to remove. He says few to none of those projects would be funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, making the new grant especially critical.
