KC District prepares for accreditation vote

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Kansas City School District has scheduled two town hall meetings in expectation of a decision next week on whether it retains its partial accreditation.

Missouri education officials are expected to make a recommendation to the state school board by Tuesday. That's when the board will consider how to classify the accreditation of Kansas City and 17 other districts.

The district has scheduled town hall meetings Wednesday and Thursday where officials will outline the effect of the state's decision. The district will also operate a phone bank Wednesday through Friday to take questions.

The state meeting comes less than a month after John Covington resigned abruptly as superintendent. Before departing for a Michigan job, he oversaw the closure of nearly half the district's schools.
