AMC Entertainment leaving Missouri for Kansas
Thursday, September 15, 2011
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — AMC Entertainment Inc. is leaving its Missouri hometown to build new offices on the Kansas side of the Kansas City metro area.
The operator of the nation’s second-largest movie theater chain announced Wednesday it’s moving its world headquarters — with about 450 employees — from downtown Kansas City to the new Park Place development in Leawood, Kan. The move is expected to take place in spring 2013.
President and CEO Gerry Lopez says the company has been looking since last year for a location that would provide more space.
AMC has occupied various downtown Kansas City locations since it began with a single movie theater in 1920. Its departure marks the latest development in what some have called a “border war” between Missouri and Kansas to attract or retain businesses.
