Your Opinion: Support Walk to End Alzheimer's

Dear Editor:

I am writing to invite Jefferson City area residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's. Join me on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. at the Missouri State Capitol grounds.

Walk to End Alzheimer's is more than a walk. It is an experience for the hundreds of participants in the area who will learn about Alzheimer's disease and how to get involved in this critical cause from advocacy opportunities, the latest in Alzheimer's research and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services.

Each walker will also join in a meaningful ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer's disease.

My life has been personally touched on multiple levels. My mother, my aunt and my fatherin-law suffered from Alzheimer's and ultimately succumbed to the disease.

You lose them not once but twice - the first time when they retreat into the world of the unknown and no longer recognize you, and the second when they pass.

There are no words that can adequately describe the feelings of pain and loss when looking into a loved one's eyes knowing that they're looking back but do not see.

Alzheimer's disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nations' sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer's disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today's estimated 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer's.
