SW Mo. sheriffs investigating cattle thefts
Friday, September 9, 2011
CARTHAGE, Mo. (AP) — Sheriff’s departments in southwest Missouri are investigating several cattle thefts in the region this spring.
Jasper County sheriff Capt. Derek Walrod says five cattle thefts involving the loss of about 150 cattle have been reported in the county since May.
He says the Jasper County sheriff’s office usually investigates one or two cattle thefts each summer.
Walrod says Barton, Lawrence and Dade counties have seen similar thefts in the past year.
The Joplin Globe reports that (http://bit.ly/pFVSJ4) investigators have had trouble determining dates and times when the thefts occurred because cattle owners don’t check their herds every day. And the state doesn’t require brands, so recovering the cattle is difficult.
