Horak, Kiprusoff lead Flames past Blues, 3-1

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Roman Horak had a goal and an assist and Miikka Kiprusoff made 28 saves as the Calgary Flames beat the St. Louis Blues 3-1 on Friday night.

Tom Kostopoulos and Olli Jokinen also scored for Calgary, which improved to 3-1-1 on its six-game homestand. Horak, a 20-year-old rookie, had two points for the second straight game after after getting his first career goal Wednesday night against Colorado.

Alex Steen scored his sixth of the year for St. Louis, which snapped a three-game winning streak.

Calgary gained momentum in the third period when St. Louis, trailing 1-0, had a power play for more than 3 minutes - including a 54-second two-man advantage - but couldn't tie it.

The Blues entered the game ranked last in the NHL with the man-advantage, having scored a league-low two goals. Despite firing five shots on Kiprusoff during that critical stretch - the most dangerous chances coming from Carlo Colaiacovo and Matt D'Agostini - the Blues couldn't capitalize.

After surviving the scare, Horak took a pass from Curtis Glencross and snapped a shot from the slot that just squeaked through Brian Elliott's pads with 7:44 remaining.

The two-goal lead lasted only 12 seconds as Steen's long shot through a screen eluded Kiprusoff to get the Blues back within one.

Jokinen sealed the win with an empty-netter with 16 seconds to go.

It was the teams' second meeting of the season between, with St. Louis winning the first game 5-2 against Calgary backup goalie Henrik Karlsson.

The Flames were much better this time with Kiprusoff in goal. He was especially sharp in the second period when he thwarted the Blues on a couple of dangerous chances to keep the game tied.

Early in the period, he displayed a quick glove hand stabbing shots off the stick of Vladimir Sobotka and then Chris Porter.

Later on, Kiprusoff jabbed out a pad to deny Jamie Langenbrunner from close-in, then scrambled to stop Jason Arnott as he tried to bury the rebound. The 35-year-old goaltender improved his career record to 19-4-2 against St. Louis.

The only score of the opening 40 minutes was Kostopoulos' goal at 14:45 of the second when he quickly sent Tim Jackman's centering pass behind Elliott.

Elliott entered the night 4-0 with a 1.59 goals-against average and .950 save percentage. The 26-year-old signed with St. Louis this past summer as a free agent after three seasons with Ottawa and a brief stint last year with Colorado after a mid-season trade.
