Not-so-special session ends

Lawmakers generally were unhappy this week with the General Assembly's failure to pass a bill during the special session that would have created new jobs.

"Obviously, we spent enough time here, that I would have liked to have seen more accomplished," freshman Rep. Jay Barnes, R-Jefferson City, said Thursday, after the House adjourned its last technical session before the Constitution's 60-day session deadline on Nov. 5.

The state Senate's top two Republican leaders declared their chamber's part of the session over on Tuesday.

"The House's action didn't matter, once the Senate adjourned," Rep. Chris Kelly, D-Columbia, explained Thursday. "The Senate's adjournment means that we cannot pass an economic development bill, legally."
