Business of Mo. Senate candidate confirms layoffs

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A St. Louis area business formerly run by Republican U.S. Senate candidate John Brunner is laying off some of its employees.

The human resources director for Vi-Jon Inc. confirmed Thursday to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/uxlJoM) that the company is laying off employees but declined to say how many. Vi-Jon makes the hand sanitizer Germ-X, as well as numerous private label personal health care products.

Brunner is a former chief executive of the company founded by his grandfather, but is no longer active in daily operations and describes himself as chairman emeritus. Brunner's Senate campaign, however, has stressed his experience in running a company and creating jobs.

His campaign issued a statement Thursday saying the economy has forced companies to make difficult choices that show the need for new leadership in Washington.
