Senate ends special session

Mayer: Fruitless to continue

It's over.

In just 45 seconds, two Missouri Senate leaders on Tuesday declared the upper chamber's part of the special legislative session finished, when they adjourned "sine die pursuant to the Constitution" and no one voted against the motion.

The Latin phrase "sine die" means "without a day," and is used legislatively to mean adjourning finally, with no ability to return for more business.

"We adjourned sine die because, obviously, the House and Senate are miles apart on the different versions that they passed of the economic development bill," Senate President Pro Tem Rob Mayer, R-Dexter, told reporters after Tuesday's mid-day meeting.

"It would be fruitless to continue onward, and waste the taxpayers' money."
