Royals 2B Giavotella has hip surgery

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Kansas City Royals say second baseman Johnny Giavotella has undergone arthroscopic surgery to correct a cartilage tear in his right hip.

The surgery was performed Thursday by Dr. Marc Philippon in Vail, Colo. The team said Friday that the recovery time is typically 10-12 weeks and Giavotella is expected to be available for the start of spring training in February.

The Royals also said right-handed pitcher Jesse Chavez was claimed on outright waivers by Toronto after he was designated for assignment by the Royals on Oct. 11.
