Mother gets 15 years for suffocating baby

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) - A St. Louis-area woman has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for suffocating her 3-month-old daughter in 2008 and injuring her infant son in 2009.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/onXwZB) reports that 23-year-old Shamique Jones of Pine Lawn was sentenced Thursday in St. Louis County Circuit Court. She received 15 years for second-degree murder and seven years each for endangering the welfare of a child and assault. The sentences will run concurrently.

Jones was convicted in August.

Police say her son had been taken to the hospital several times because he stopped breathing, leading to the inquiry into her daughter's earlier death.
