Friday's NHL Capsules

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jeff Skinner scored a power-play goal with 1:24 left in the third period and Cam Ward made 39 saves in leading the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night.

Brandon Sutter and Tim Brent each scored short-handed goals, while Jay Harrison also scored for the Hurricanes, who have won two straight since getting off to a 0-2-1 start to the season. Ward had a solid outing, at one point stopping 30 consecutive shots.

Skinner's goal came 57 seconds after Drew Stafford tied the game at 3. Jussi Jokinen set up the goal by feeding a pass through the middle and into the right circle, where Skinner one-timed it. Goalie Ryan Miller got a piece of the shot with his left pad, but the puck had enough momentum to trickle in the net.

Derek Roy and Thomas Vanek also scored for the Sabres, who were playing their first game at Buffalo since opening the season with two wins in Europe last weekend.

Ducks 1, Sharks 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jonas Hiller made 31 saves in his 12th career shutout, Maxime Macenauer scored his first NHL goal, and Anaheim beat San Jose.

Hiller is finally healthy after an apparent case of vertigo ruined last season. He was back in All-Star form in his first home start in nearly nine months, stopping 11 shots in the final period against the Ducks' Pacific Division rivals.

Thomas Greiss stopped 22 shots for the Sharks, who had five days off after beating Phoenix in their home opener.

The Ducks are back from a full week off after returning from Europe, where they split two regular-season games and played an exhibition against Jokerit, the Finnish club that once employed Teemu Selanne.
