St. Joseph experts help make dog-focused commercial

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Animal behavior experts in St. Joseph have helped Nestlé Purina PetCare develop what the company is calling the first television commercial designed to appeal to dogs.
The St. Joseph News-Press (http://bit.ly/os5MqA) reported that the commercial designed to sell Beneful dog food was created for viewers in Austria.
That means Missouri residents will be able to see the ad only online.
The effort started this spring when company officials approached the Nestlé Purina Product Technology Center in St. Joseph. The goal was to make a commercial to appeal to four-legged customers.
The first attempt met with little success. But St. Joseph experts discovered a combination of sounds that attract a dog's attention without distracting from the human-focused dialogue.
