JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A fourth Missouri case of listeriosis has been linked to contaminated cantaloupe from a farm in Colorado.
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services says it was notified Friday by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that a listeria infection in northwestern Missouri was linked to the tainted fruit.
State health officials say all four people who were sickened by the fruit were hospitalized. One of those was a 94-year-old who later died, but medical officials determined the death was not caused by listeria.
As of Friday, the Colorado cantaloupes were linked to more than 100 illnesses and 21 deaths in 23 from California to the East Coast. Most healthy adults can consume listeria with no ill effects. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches and gastrointestinal problems.
