Window maker expanding in Freeburg
Tuesday, October 4, 2011
FREEBURG, Mo. (AP) — A central Missouri window manufacturer plans to spend more than $11 million on an expansion that could add 95 new employees.
Gov. Jay Nixon traveled to the Quaker Windows headquarters in Freeburg on Tuesday to announce the company’s expansion plans. The state is offering the company more than $350,000 of tax incentives over five years.
Quaker Windows plans to build a new paint facility, which will free about 50,000 square-feet of additional manufacturing space. The company plans to start making windows specially designed for buildings in hurricane zones. It also plans to make a new line of wooden patio doors.
Last year, Quaker announced it was hiring 45 employees while expanding its production of windows that meet federal energy-efficiency standards.
The company employs more than 400 people.

Addng jobs makes for good headlines. Especially in this economy. Before we start to celebrate, we should pause and ask ourselves just how many production line employees at Quaker Window work full-time jobs and still qualify for housing and heating assistance? How many children of these Quaker employees qualify for medicaid, food stamps and free school lunches. I'm not saying these families shouldn't receive these benefits. I think they should, especially when the parent(s) work full time, even overtime, and still find themselves living below the federal poverty line. Don't you see? Quaker is already subsidized by the taxpayer when their workforce qualifies for, and lives on partial welfare. On top of that, the government is now giving these millionaires more tax breaks. I doubt that these new jobs will ever materialize; I'm from Missouri, you'll have to "show me." And even if they do, BIG DEAL!
