Jefferson City redistricting won't be done before election

Legislative wrangling over boundaries delays action by city

After waiting too long on legislative redistricting, Jefferson City is looking to begin its own redistricting process this winter after the filing period for municipal elections ends.

Nathan Nickolaus, interim city administrator and city attorney, said the city had delayed moving forward with redistricting at the request of the county to wait for the redistricting of legislative boundaries to be finished. That way, he said, the legislative districts and different wards could line up as closely as possible, meaning fewer necessary precincts.

But those boundaries still have not been established as House and Senate panels have had to put the decision into the hands of the courts.
