Lawsuits challenge makeup of congressional map

Cole County Circuit Judge Dan Green will hear arguments Dec. 8 in two lawsuits challenging the Legislature's new congressional districts map.

Missouri's Constitution requires the Legislature to redraw the district boundaries every 10 years, after the U.S. Census Bureau finalizes the nation's official population count.

This year, because other states' populations grew faster than Missouri's, the General Assembly's challenge included cutting the number of districts from nine to eight.

But the lawsuits argue that lawmakers failed to follow their constitutional duty to draw new districts that are compact, contiguous and shaped in a way that protects all voters' rights.

After the Legislature adopted its map last April 27, Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed it April 30, saying the approved districts did "not adequately protect the interests of all Missourians."
