Boone County considers alternative court for vets

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Boone County veterans who run afoul of the law may soon be able to resolve their legal disputes in an alternative court for former soldiers.

The Columbia Daily Tribune (http://bit.ly/uX3ull ) reports that county judicial officials are considering a new alternative sentencing court that would provide specialized treatment for local veterans. The court would be similar to existing alternative sentencing programs for drug and alcohol offenders.

The county is seeking federal and state grant money for the program and hopes to work with the Veterans Integrated Service Network, which operates Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital in Columbia.

More than 10,000 veterans live in Boone County, with another 7,000-plus in neighboring Cole County.
