Kansas City police kill suspect, find 2 dead

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kansas City police say officers investigating a residential burglary killed a suspect in a shootout and then found two people dead inside the home.

The shootings occurred around 10 p.m. Thursday at a home in south-central Kansas City.

Police say in a news release that a man opened fire on the officers when they arrived. They returned fire, killing the suspect. His name has not been released.

The two people found dead in the home were identified Friday as 53-year-old Loretta Petty, who lived there, and 16-year-old Deja Davis, of Kansas City.

Relatives told The Kansas City Star (http://bit.ly/sz3KiD) that Davis was Petty's goddaughter.

A third person who was in the house was taken into custody but later released.
