Friday afternoon fire damages home

Firefighters respond to a structure fire Friday at 5208 Bagnall Drive in the Westview Drive area. The fire was reported to have started in a back bedroom where two children were playing unattended. The house was Section eight rental and the woman had just had a house fire last week.

Firefighters from Cole County Fire Protection District battled a house fire Friday afternoon in the Westview Heights area.

According to fire district reports, the blaze at 5208 Bagnall Drive was reported around 2:10 p.m.

Residents reported bedding was on fire in a bedroom. When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke was coming from a rear bedroom.

The fire was brought under control about 10 minutes after crews arrived.

Fire damage was contained to the bedroom, but the whole house suffered smoke damage.

The official cause of the fire is being listed as undetermined.

All the residents of the home had escaped before firefighters arrived, but the family dog was rescued.

The Red Cross was called in to assist the family of five.
