One contested council race to be decided in February
Tuesday, November 22, 2011
At the close of the city filing period Tuesday, only Jefferson City’s 1st Ward voters will have a choice during next year’s City Council elections.
Filing ended at 5 p.m. Tuesday, and one more candidate threw her hat in the ring for the only contested race.
Velma Steinman has joined candidates Rick Prather and Tyler Woods in filing for the 1st Ward council seat held by Mike Harvey, who can’t run again because of term limits.
In the 2nd Ward, incumbent Rich Koon has chosen not to re-file, which effectively allows his seat to go to J. Rick Mihalevich, who works at Linn State Technical College and is a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission.
Incumbents Bob Scrivner in the 3rd Ward, Carrie Carroll in the 4th Ward, and Dave Griffith in the 5th Ward will retain their seats for another term.
Filing opened Oct. 18 with Woods, Mihalevich, Carroll and Griffith filing on the first day.
Steinman, Woods and Prather will appear on the Feb. 7, 2012, ballot. The two candidates with the most votes will square off in the April general election.
However, if one candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, no general election will be held and that candidate will win the open council seat.
