Center expects greater need during holidays

The need is great, and the holidays only make that more visible for some.

The Samaritan Center in Jefferson City has seen an increase in the numbers of families it helps, and the holidays are fast approaching.

Last year, the center distributed more than 1,600 turkeys, complete with all the items for a Thanksgiving meal.

Donations of money earmarked for turkeys or the donation of a turkey itself will be accepted at the center, 1310 E. McCarty St.

The center also assists families at Christmas and are asking for help. Last year, the center served 412 families and 43 seniors. This year, the center is expecting it will serve even more.

Churches, Sunday School classes, offices and groups can help meet that need, agency leaders say, by adopting a family or senior for the holiday.

After adoption forms are filled out by the donors, the center will pair the donor with a family or person. Adoption forms can be found at www.midmosamaritancenter.org.

Another way to offer help is to donate new toys, valued at $10, to Santa’s Workshop. Santa’s Workshop is a program that allows families who live outside of Cole County but are clients of the center to choose two toys per child, ages birth to 13.

Donations of non-perishable food items, and cash are also always needed. There is also a need for volunteers. For more information or to volunteer, call the Samaritan Center at (573) 634-7776.
