Your Opinion: Veteran recalls friend's kindness

Dear Editor:

As this week marks the 136th birthday of the United States Marine Corps Nov. 10 and Veterans Day, I would like to present a different perspective on the treatment of Vietnam Veterans returning home.

I served in the United States Marine Corps from September 1964 through August 1968, also serving a tour in Vietnam from May of 1967 until June of 1968.

During that time the wives of our local police officers chose a local service member to write to. I was fortunate that "B" chose my name. She faithfully wrote to me every two weeks and most always included the Sunday funnies. Little did she know what a connection that made for me to have a part of our local paper and those funnies were shared with the Marines that I served with.

When I returned home "B" came to my house with a gift to welcome me home. One thing that was in the box was a bottle of Aqua Velva after shave lotion (yes, I still remember).

Though we don't see each other often we are still friends. What a blessing it is to still have a connection after all these years.

"B,", thank you for your faithfulness and may God Bless You.
