Your Opinion: Old City Cemetery needs attention

Dear Editor:

On Nov. 4 I helped place flags on the veterans' graves at Riverview Cemetery. I couldn't help but notice how well maintained it was. It was quite a contrast between it and the Old City Cemetery. A friend and I have recently gone through the Old City Cemetery photographing and recording information from the stones.

After recording information and entering the information, I compared it to the information gathered by the NSDAR chapter in 1976. They recorded information from a number of stones that are not there now.

What happened to those stones? I thought it was against the law to remove a stone from a cemetery. If so, why did the City of Jefferson allow it to happen since they have oversight of the cemetery.

There has been much talk recently about developing Adrian's Island, developing the old prison site, and a new convention center. It is nice to plan for the future.

But before you proceed on these projects, I think something should be done about the deplorable condition of the Old City Cemetery.

The condition this cemetery is in is an unacceptable way to remember and honor past residents of the City of Jefferson.
