Our Opinion: United Way celebrates continued spirit of generosity
Thursday, November 10, 2011
We join with area United Way volunteers in thanking our community for its continuing generosity.
Despite the many economic challenges, Central Missourians once again have propelled the annual campaign beyond its goal.
At a Victory Celebration on Wednesday, the United Way of Central Missouri announced projected pledges total $1,643,790. Pledges continue to be counted, but contributions already surpass the $1.63 million goal.
The area United Way funds the health and human services provided by 25 member agencies and programs in Cole, Miller, Moniteau, Osage and southern Callaway counties.
The service area is extensive, as is the need.
The campaign total also is large, as is the volunteer base.
The most important of these large numbers, however, is the number of individual contributors.
The value of each individual donation is immense, and this year’s campaign co-chairs expressed both recognition and appreciation to the many contributors.
“Challenging times call for big hearts,” said Ann Littlefield, a co-chair. “It’s no surprise Mid-Missourians have answered the call to help their friends and neighbors.”
Added John Kehoe, the other co-chair: “We are so fortunate to be able to count on our contributors year after year.”
Ultimately, the campaign effort reflects the “Live United” slogan.
Essentially, many individual contributions are united into a large total distributed through a coordinated network to meet individual needs.
Both the individual in need and the network itself depend on you — the contributor.
Your generosity, once again, is cause for community celebration.
