Your Opinion: Distinction pointed out by founding fathers

Dear Editor:

There has been much discussion about our founding fathers and what position Christianity should play in this nation.

James Madison (who is certainly one of the founding fathers) wrote an essay entitled "Memorial and Remonstration Against Religious Assessments".

He argued the state had no business supporting Christian instruction. His argument was signed by over 2,000 Virginians. He made the point "Who does not see that the same authority which can establish Christianity in exclusion of all other Religions, may establish with the same case any particular sect of Christianity, in exclusion of all other Sects.?"

There is a big distinction between the statement, we are a nation founded on Christian principal and the statement that we should be a Christian nation.
