Verizon looks to put new cell tower at Riverside Park

Verizon Wireless is looking to add a new cell tower to the Jefferson City area and is continuing discussions with the city to place a tower at Riverside Park.

At the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting Tuesday, Department Director Bill Lockwood said the wireless company's existing tower in the downtown area has reached capacity and is now "under serving the Capitol" area. As a result, the company has entered discussions with the city to place a new tower in Riverside Park.

Lockwood said the discussions are still in the initial phase and the tower possibly would be a flag pole-style cell tower about 60 feet high. The company could pay the city around $14,000 to $15,000 per year for the new tower, he said, which the company hopes to see installed early next year.
