Missouri auditor to review state agency after Mamtek

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich (schwyk) is reviewing the Department of Economic Development in light of a failed plan to build an artificial sweetener plant in Moberly.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reported Tuesday (http://bit.ly/w0uaCu) that Schweich will audit the department's business and community services division, which helps businesses and local government access incentive programs.

House Speaker Steven Tilley had requested the audit of the department and the state tax credits offered to Mamtek U.S. Inc., which planned to build the factory.

The project also is under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Missouri attorney general and Randolph County prosecutor and separate House and Senate committees.

Schweich says he opted for a broader audit because a narrower probe could interfere with investigations already under way.
